HISTORY OF THE COMMUNITY Greenwood, Indiana
The settlement of Greenwood began more than 150 years ago and has a proud heritage. A small community of 300 people incorporated the town of Greenwood in 1864. A post office was established in 1824 for the village, which was first named Greenfield. However, when settlers realized another Hoosier town had selected that name, they changed the name to Greenwood.
In its early years, Greenwood became an important shipping point for grain, livestock and lumber through the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad. One of the most important growth factors for the community was the J.T. Polk canning factory started in 1872. It became the largest cannery west of Baltimore. The plant was sold to the Stokley's corporation in 1930 and remained operational until 1959.
The town's population grew slowly until 1946, when the first housing development was planned. Many changes have taken place in recent history. As of the 2000 census, incorporated population has boomed to approximately 36,037.
Greenwood is leading Johnson County, which is leading the state as one of the fastest growing areas. Greenwood's slogan "Pride and Progress" is indeed descriptive of the City's growth. While preserving its past, Greenwood presses its commitment to the future.
